What is the best age for you to get pregnant?
A report from The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists shows that the average childbearing age for women is currently 29.3 years, compared to 1968, when it was 23.
However, doctors point out that this is simply an estimation, and the report was written and published to make women more aware of the life cycle of fertility. For instance, the report reveals that the number of women giving birth over the age of 40 has tripled in the last 20 years, with nearly 27,000 babies being born to 40+ women in the last year.
However, doctors do say that the most 'secure' age for women to have children still remains age 20 – 35. Women over the age of 35 are as much as six times more likely to have fertility issues, compared with if they conceived ten years before. Research shows that up to 30% of 35 year olds take longer than a year to have children, while it is only 5% for 25 year olds.
Medical experts suggest that although there are a number of reasons why women start families later, e.g. finding a suitable partner and career interests, "women should be given more information on the unpredictability of pregnancy and the problems that can occur in older mothers."
